The Natural Wonder of Vietnam
Halong Bay, located in Quang Ninh province of Vietnam, is one of the world’s most extraordinary natural wonders. With its emerald green waters and thousands of towering limestone islands topped by rainforests, the bay creates a spectacular seascape of unparalleled beauty.
The name “Halong” means “descending dragon,” originating from a legend in which dragons were sent by the gods to protect Vietnam from invaders. These dragons spat out jewels and jade that turned into the islands and islets dotting the bay, forming a natural fortress against invaders.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, Halong Bay covers an area of around 1,553 km² and includes 1,960 to 2,000 islets, most of which are limestone. The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments.
